Cherry Hill is moving forward with plans to bring active farming back to the historic Holly Ravine Farm property.
The township plans to lease approximately 9.5 acres of municipally owned land to a farmer. Crops would once again grow at the prominent Evesham and Springdale roads property.
Township Council will consider authorizing bids for the agricultural lease. The move represents another step in Cherry Hill’s long-term preservation plans.
Previously, the township spent approximately $3.86 million to protect Holly Ravine Farm from development. The acquisition preserved the property as permanent open space.
Now, Cherry Hill plans to combine agriculture with public recreational uses across the site.
Approximately 12 additional acres will support passive recreation. New trails will also provide public access for hiking and other outdoor activities.
The property’s agricultural history stretches back approximately a century. Former Cherry Hill Mayor John C. Gilmour Jr. began farming the land during that period.
Earlier this year, two former Gilmour family farmhouses were demolished. However, the township’s latest plans would restore an agricultural use to part of the property.
The initiative takes a different approach from development occurring across many suburban communities. Instead of adding buildings, Cherry Hill is returning preserved land to productive agricultural use.
Furthermore, the combination of farmland and recreational space could create a unique community amenity within the densely developed township.
The agricultural lease would support Cherry Hill’s broader effort to preserve open space while honoring Holly Ravine Farm’s history.
