Cherry Hill Moves Toward Data Center Ban Amid Growing Concerns

Cherry Hill officials are taking steps to prevent future data center development within the township. As a result, the community is joining a growing number of municipalities questioning the long-term impacts of the rapidly expanding industry.

Although no data center proposal is currently under review, township leaders are working on an ordinance that would prohibit the facilities. The effort reflects increasing concerns surrounding energy demand, water consumption, and infrastructure strain.

Data centers have become one of the fastest-growing property sectors nationwide. Driven largely by artificial intelligence and cloud computing, these facilities require significant electrical capacity and extensive cooling systems.

However, many communities are beginning to scrutinize the industry more closely. Concerns often center on utility usage, environmental impacts, noise generation, and limited job creation relative to the amount of land consumed.

More than 80 data centers currently operate throughout New Jersey. Meanwhile, several large-scale projects have generated debate across the state as local officials evaluate their potential impacts on surrounding neighborhoods.

Cherry Hill’s position mirrors actions taken elsewhere. Recently, Millville adopted a ban on new data center development, citing concerns over power consumption, water usage, noise, and environmental effects.

At the state level, lawmakers are also increasing oversight. Proposed legislation would require New Jersey data center operators to report water and energy consumption on a recurring basis. Consequently, policymakers are seeking a clearer understanding of how these facilities affect public resources.

At the same time, environmental organizations have called for additional review before more projects move forward. Some advocacy groups have even proposed a temporary statewide moratorium on new data center construction.

While New Jersey continues exploring opportunities tied to artificial intelligence and technology investment, municipalities are weighing those economic benefits against infrastructure and environmental considerations.

For now, Cherry Hill appears focused on limiting future data center development as local officials evaluate the industry’s long-term impact on residents and public resources.
